Electromagnetic meters are popular because water conducts electricity and these meters have no moving parts, offering long life with low maintenance. Ultrasonic meters are also common, especially on larger pipes, since they have no moving parts and work well across different pipe sizes and conditions. Turbine meters are a well-established choice for clean, steady water flows, providing good accuracy at reasonable cost.

Coriolis meters, while extremely accurate for mass flow and density, come with higher cost and more complex installation. They’re typically used in specialized industrial processes where precise mass flow is essential. Because municipal water systems prioritize economical, reliable volumetric measurement, Coriolis meters aren’t as commonly used. So Coriolis meters are not a common flow meter type in water systems.
